Common Core
The Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401 follows the Common Core State Standards of Illinois.
What is it?
Today’s students are preparing to enter a world in which colleges and businesses are demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful. Over forty states have voluntarily adopted and are moving forward with the standards.
The new standards also provide a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers.

What is it?
In recent years, many states have adopted new, more rigorous academic standards, and teachers have been using them since then in their daily instruction. As a result, states needed high-quality assessments aligned to those standards that would test students of all achievement levels on what they are learning. These are the PARCC Tests.
The PARCC assessment system is made up of two categories of tools:
- Annual year-end tests in English language arts/literacy, and mathematics tests in grades 3-8 and high school; and
- Instructional tools that teachers may use at their discretion anytime during the school year. These include formative tasks for grades K-2, 3-8, and high school; diagnostic tools; and speaking and listening tools; and performance-based modules.
Visit the PARCC Test website to learn more about the use of the tests and how to assess your child’s scores, or visit their Practice Tests page, broken down by subject and grade level, to try a practice test.

Because these books are for use in the Library only, you may feel free to use them to read and take notes, and we will make copies for your use at home.
In addition, on our Test Prep page you can access other test prep resources, as well as Tutor.com - a database that offers tests, practice work, and live tutoring separated by grade and subject level. You can access any of these databases in the Library though one of our computers, or at home by logging in with your Library Card number.
