Sometimes the item you want is currently checked out, possibly with a long waiting list. Or sometimes we don't own the item at all. This is when you should place a hold on the item you want, so that you can be put on a waiting list and not miss out on getting that hot new book or movie you keep hearing about.

The Elmwood Park Public Library is part of SWAN, which is a consortium of over 90 libraries. Everyone is SWAN shares material with other member libraries, so whether we own the item or not, you have access to over 9 million items in the SWAN catalog, all by placing a hold. And if we do own the item you're looking for then you, as an Elmwood Park patron, always come before other library patrons if there is a waiting list.

For a brief introduction to placing a hold, watch the video below. Or scroll further down the page for more information about managing your holds.

Of course, as you are searching the SWAN Catalog while you are logged in to My Account, you can always request books, movies, and music by clicking on the Place Hold link next to the item.  Staff are always happy to help you put items on hold, as well!

Pacing a Hold - Video Overview

Manage Your Holds

If you see a green exclamation point hovering on the Holds tab, that means you have a hold that is ready for pickup at the Library.  Just click on the Holds tab to view either the Digital Holds (eBooks and eAudiobooks) menu or the Library Holds (physical books, DVDs, CDs, etc.) menu.  If an item says Available, that means it is ready for pickup.  If it says Unavailable, you are still in the holds queue.

You can cancel any holds that you no longer want.

Suspend Holds

You can Suspend your holds until a specific date. This is useful if you are going on vacation and you think your item might show up while you are gone.  Since we only hold items for seven days once they are ready to be picked up, you don’t want your item to get returned without the chance to check it out!  So when you Suspend your item, it prevents you from being the next person on the list to get the item.  You will still move up the waiting list, you just won’t be the person to get the item.  But as soon you Unsuspend your item, you will again be allowed to be the next person to get the item!

You can also Suspend your items by checking the box for the item you want and clicking on Suspend.

Pickup Anywhere

Did you  know that you don't have to pick up your hold at the Elmwood Park Public Library? We always love seeing you, but if you work close to another SWAN library that is easier to get to, then you can have your holds sent there for pickup instead of Elmwood Park.

As mentioned in the video above, you can choose a library for pickup when you place the hold, but you can also change a pickup location afterwards, as long as the item is not already in transit or already available for pickup (at that point it's too late to change).  Just check the box (??) of the items you want to change and click on Edit Pickup Location (??). Then choose a new library from the drop-down menu, and click on Change (??).  Now your item will be sent the chosen library when it becomes available for you.
