We are a group of local folks just like you, who care about helping our community’s library continue to be the outstanding resource for the residents of Elmwood Park and their children.

  • Vice President - Gloria Hall
  • Secretary - Janice Wilde
  • Treasurer - Carol Zagorski

How long have the Friends been around?

There has been a group of residents involved as volunteers about as long as there has been a library in Elmwood Park.

What do the Friends do?

Our primary purpose is to raise money to enhance library programs and resources. Since 2002 we have raised approximately $30,000 through membership fees and bookcase sales.

Where does the money go?

Money we raise goes to supporting the Library in a variety of ways:

  • Sponsorship of adult and youth programs, including support for genealogy, cooking, floral, health, and antique programs, as well as many performances from children's entertainers. To see a list of Friends-sponsored events, check the Library's online calendar, our newsletter, and in-house signage.
  • Special collections & building items that are not within the annual library budget.  The children's puppet theater, modular children's furniture, Explore-To-Go Science Kits, an outdoor bench and butterfly garden are all recent additions supported by the Friends.
  • Support for special annual events, including Summer Reading, the Fourth of July parade, and the Library's new Club Conti annual fundraiser.

Are you graduating high school?  Are you thinking of continuing your schooling?  It can be expensive to do so, but every little bit helps, and the Friends of the Elmwood Park Public Library want to help!

The Friends of the Elmwood Park Public Library offer one $500 scholarship each year (or two depending on financial availability) to an Elmwood Park young adult who will be attending their first year of college or trade school, and has been an active volunteer with the Elmwood Park Public Library and the Friends of the Library.

This year's application period is over, but you can still click on the 2019 Information Sheet to learn a bit more. Stay tuned this fall for details regarding the 2020 Scholarship.

ian babelonia2 crop 200hCongratulations to Ian Babelonia!

Ian is the recipient of the Friends of the Library's 2019 Volunteer Scholarship. After volunteering 100 hours of time with the Library and the Friends, Ian will be receiving a check for $500 at the April 18 Library Board meeting. Ian plans to apply the funds towards his textbooks at the University of Illinois at Chicago this fall.

What does becoming a member mean?

You can be a passive member of the Friends with your simple $5.00 annual membership donation.

Or you can choose to be more active and involved by attending monthly meetings and/or volunteering to assist with book sales, special events, and other Friends-sponsored programs. Monthly meetings are typically at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of each month.

How do I become a Friend of the Elmwood Park Public Library?

Just print out the Membership Form and mail it in with your $5.00 donation (or $25.00 for a business membership), or bring it to one of our monthly meetings held the 2nd Monday of every month at 1:00 p.m. (except July and August) in one of the Library's meeting rooms.

If you have any questions please contact the Adult Services desk for more information at 708.395.1217 or leave a voicemail directly for the Friends at 708.395.1298 or contact the Friends' President at 708-769-6224.

In addition to membership, the Friends raise funds by organizing and maintaining an ongoing book sale in the Library’s lobby. Browse paperbacks, kids books, cookbooks, DVDs, and more. Choose items and simply pay at the donation box.

You can also support the Friends' book sales by donating your new and gently used books to the Library at the dropbox in the lobby.

In addition to the ongoing sale mentioned above, last year also marked the return of large and pop-up book sale events throughout the year.

We had a successful sale in June 2018 and are planning a pop-up for the Fall. Keep your eyes open for more news!
