Our first priority is ensuring the safety of our patrons and staff.  We will be following public health guidelines from the Restore Illinois plan and the Center for Disease Control. Please be aware that our plan may change at any time based on new information or directives from the State. We greatly appreciate your patience and support as we navigate this new phase.

 Limited Library Hours

Monday/Wednesday/Friday/Saturday: 12-6 p.m.
Tuesday & Thursday: 12-8 p.m.

*Monday, August 3 - The Kids & Teens department is now open for browsing and computer use, with adult supervision required for children ages 10 & under.

Limited Services Available

Walk-in Services - No appointments necessary

  • Adult and Kids & Teens Collection Browsing - The book, DVD, audiobook, CD, and video game collections are now open for browsing in both departments.  The magazine & newspaper collections remain closed. If you would like a magazine, please ask staff for assistance.
  • Library card account services - Get or renew a library card, pay fines, update account information, etc. 
  • Computer sessions in both Adult and Kids & Teens departments:
    • Computers are available for one 90 minute session each day.
    • No appointment needed.
    • Computers are available to both residents and non-residents.
  • Computer printing - If you just need to print, but have a computer or device available at home, we highly encourage you to continue to make use of our free wireless printing through Curbside Pickup for now, rather than use the computers at the Library.
  • Tech assistance - Only limited in-person tech assistance will be available due to social distancing guidelines.
  • Faxing available at the Circulation Desk.
  • Copy machine use (copy, print, and scan) 
  • Delivery between SWAN libraries has resumed, which means you can start placing holds on material owned by other libraries. Please note that at this time not all SWAN libraries are sending out material.

 

What Remains Unavailable:

  • General Seating - Most seating has been removed for now, as we encourage you to limit your stay.
  • Study & Meeting Room Usage - Study and meeting rooms remain closed to individuals and groups until further notice.
  • In-house Programs - In-house programs have been suspended for now. Please check our online calendar for a list of our virtual programs and Carry-Out Kits.
  • Activities - Toys, iPads, coloring sheets, and play areas are currently unavailable in Kids & Teens.

 

For Your Safety

  • Entering the Building - A staff member at the entrance will be in charge of limiting building capacity, as well as ensuring our safety requirements are being met:
    • With a limited capacity, you may need to wait until another patron leaves before you can enter.
    • Your temperature will be taken, and those with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher will not be allowed into the building.
    • Masks
      • All patrons over 2 years old will be required to wear a face mask while in the building.
      • For those medically unable to wear a mask, the Library will try its best to make reasonable accommodations. If you are unable to wear a mask, please contact us and let us know what you need, so that we may best serve you.
    • Children under the age of 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Inside the Building
    • You must keep your mask on at all times while inside the building.
    • Please maintain social distancing of 6 feet.
    • While visiting, practice good hygiene such as hand-washing and avoiding touching your face.
    • Food and drinks will not be allowed.
    • Plexiglas dividers will be in place at all service desks.
    • Only limited in-person tech assistance will be available due to social distancing guidelines.
    • Children under the age of 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

We will continuously evaluate our ability to maintain a safe, healthy environment for staff and patrons. These expectations are subject to change as needed.

 

Library Spaces

  • We encourage you to try to keep your visits brief, to around 2 hours at most:
    • 30 minutes for browsing the collection
    • 90 minutes for computer use 
  • High-touch spaces and surfaces will frequently be cleaned throughout the day.
  • Furniture and tables have been removed or spaced out to help maintain social distancing. 
  • Restrooms are limited to 2 people or one family at a time. 
  • The number of available computers will be limited and sessions will be 90 minutes in length, limit 1 session per day.
  • The Kids & Teens department, and all associated toys & activities, is currently unavailable. 
  • Meeting and study rooms remain unavailable until further notice.
  • Patrons will not be allowed to study or hang out in the Library to limit exposure and contact. 
  • Children under the age of 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.

 

Using the Library's Limited Services

Computer Use

WiFi - Don't forget, if you are uncomfortable coming inside the building, the Library's WiFi network extends to parking spaces behind, directly in front of, and across the street from the building.

 

Copy Machine Use

photocopier2The copy machines in Adult Services will be available for use, and offer:

  • Copying - $0.10 a page for black & white, $0.25 a page for color
  • Scanning to USB or email - Free

 

Faxing

Faxing will be available at the Circulation Desk:

  • All Illinois area codes and Toll free numbers cost $1.00 per page.
  • Out of state phone numbers cost $2.00 per page.
  • International phone numbers cost $3.00 per page.

 

Returning Material

  • book drop1Despite the building being open, please do not hand books and DVDs to staff members as they still must immediately go into quarantine.
  • All items (except large specialty items) must be returned in the materials return slots in the front of the building or drive-thru in the rear. 
  • Large specialty items (such as Beyond Books and Explore-to-Go Kits) that do not fit in the material return slots can be returned to a designated bin that will be available in the Lobby during open hours. 
  • All returned Library items will continue to be quarantined for up to 7 days.  Once you return an item, you may see it on your account for 7 days. Items won’t be checked in until they are done being quarantined, but will be checked in fine free.

 

Library Cards

  • You may apply for a new Elmwood Park library card at the Circulation Desk. Please make sure to bring a photo ID with your Elmwood Park address on it.  Click here for more information about library cards.
  • You may renew your library card, but please note that all Library cards expiring from January 1, 2020 through September 7, 2020 will be renewed until September 8, 2020.
  • You may pay off any preexisting fines you may have. As staff prefer not to handle cash at this time, please bring a credit card if you are able.
  • We can help you at the Circulation Desk if you have other questions about your account, but we encourage you to call the Library at 708.453.7645 to ask questions instead.

 

Reference Questions, Placing Holds, & Checking Out Material

  • While the Adult book and video collections are now open for browsing and checkout, we encourage you to continue to place holds through the SWAN Online Catalog or by calling us, and make use of our Curbside Holds Pickup Service.

  • Self Checkout machine in the main lobby is now available.

 

Ways to Limit Your Time in the Library

We understand that many feel uncomfortable visiting the Library at this time. Here are some of things we can offer to help:

  • The Library’s WiFi is available outside the building with no password.  We also have Chromebook Laptops and WiFi Hotspots for checkout.
  • All Library items automatically renew up to 2 times if there is no hold on the item.
  • All EPPL items continue to not accrue fines for now. 
  • Library staff members are happy to put together a collection of books or other items for you to check out so you don’t have to come in and browse. Fill out these forms for Adults or for Kids & Teens
  • If a family member or friend is available to pick up your holds, they can do so. It’s best if you call ahead and add them to your account.
